“PDPA and You” Singapore PDPA Preventive measure 9 Obligations to follow PDPA (No.1)
PDPA has been the buzz word in Singapore. PDPA stands for Personal Data Protection Act.
Do Not Call (DNC)
2nd January 2014
Data Protection Rules
2nd July 2014
PDPA is made up of 2 parts : DNC ( Do Not Call) Registry and Data Protection Rules. They were introduced to us in parts , with DNC came into effect on 2nd January 2014 and Data Protection Rules on 2nd July 2014.
Why is PDPA Important to us?
Most of us play double roles in PDPA. We are the individual protected by this law and as an organisation( regardless as employer or employee).
Our role in PDPA
(Whether as employer or employee)
Lets’ start with us as an individual. Why would PDPA be important to us an individual ? On a daily basis, we would be revealing personal data such as name, IC number, telephone number, address and others to organization. This could happened in the restaurant, shopping, filling up a form for lucky draw, signing up for membership and many other activities.
Now the big question “ What if organization misuse our information?”
Good news to us, PDPA had been set in place to protect the safety of individuals’ data. Furthermore, we are given greater control over how our personal data is collected, used and disclosed. Organization needs to inform the purpose of collection and usage of our personal information. Therefor the decision is in our hands, whether we would give consent to the organization request or otherwise.
Our other role as an “Organization” regardless whether we are the employer or employee needs to be align to PDPA. Why do we need PDPA? The answer is summarize into one word “Trust”.
With PDPA we would be able to gain the trust of our customers. Yes, it is our duty to protect their trust, hence it is no surprise this keep appearing in most of the companies’ corporate value to instill as a culture.
This will position your company on the path for growth. Furthermore, PDPA is important for smoother cross-border transfer of information and business.
The implementation of the policy and education for the staff to change their mindset might be hard but it is definitely and investment. Lets’ keep in touch, as I would be back with more information next week about the 9 Obligation of PDPA. Cheers!
